Fetal and Newborn Health Program

The Fetal and Newborn Health Program is dedicated to understanding the mechanisms of typical and atypical fetal and newborn growth, such as intrauterine growth restriction and pre-eclampsia, to develop non-invasive and safe methods of assessing fetal, newborn and maternal health. This research program is recognized internationally and is highly regarded for its bench-to-bedside translational research.

Relevance of the Program
CHRI is recognized internationally as one of the strongest prenatal research groups in the world. As part of this group, the Fetal and Newborn Health Program gains strength from the multidisciplinary research expertise.

The Program is also affiliated with both clinical and basic science departments with strong academic leadership and a commitment to research. It has received support from CHRI, Lawson Health Research Institute, St. Joseph’s Health Care, London Health Sciences Centre and The University of Western Ontario.

Opportunities Created
Partnerships with Western’s Departments of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Paediatrics provide support, funding and research space. This contributes to recruitment and renewal of scientists and close interaction between the Program and the Developmental Biology Program.

Moving laboratories to the new Victoria Research Laboratory facilities also increases interaction with other relevant investigative groups within CHRI (Developmental Biology) and the London Regional Cancer Program. Construction of the London Regional Innovarium on the Western campus will allow researchers to increase collaborations with the Robotics Surgery Group based at the University campus of London Health Sciences Centre.

Clinical translational research is an important component of the Program. Research space at the new Grace Donnelly Pavilion and the Children’s Hospital of Western Ontario will facilitate research at this new hospital site.

The Program’s Future Direction
The Program aims to recruit investigators to ensure continued recognition as a high profile research group internationally. Academic development and interaction with other relevant investigative groups are also important objectives.
Leaders and scientists from this program are involved in the functional planning for the new Women’s and Children’s Hospital. This will ensure space for clinical research and a perinatal wet laboratory.
