Lawson Scientist studies Type 1 Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic disease that has no cure. It is ranked as the seventh leading cause of death in Canada. Every year, 60,000 Canadians are diagnosed with diabetes, and the number of new cases is increasing. According to the Canadian Diabetes Association, approximately 10% of individuals with diabetes have type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas no longer produces insulin because islet cells have been destroyed. The body needs insulin to use sugar for energy. The onset of type 1 diabetes can occur very quickly, and includes symptoms such as frequent urination, increased thirst, rapid weight loss and fatigue.
